Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh in second Test to win series

COLOMBO: Rangana Herath celebrated his 35th birthday with a career-best 7-89 as Sri Lanka clinched the series against Bangladesh with a comfortable seven-wicket win in the second and final Test on Tuesday.
Opener Tillakaratne Dilshan (57) and left-handed Kumar Sangakkara (55) put on 94 for the second wicket before Sri Lanka achieved a 160-run target on the penultimate day in Colombo.
The opening Test ended in a draw in Galle.
Former captain Sangakkara, who scored three successive centuries in the series, cracked eight fours in his 85-ball knock before being bowled by off-spinner Sohag Gazi.
Dilshan, bowled by paceman Robiul Islam, hit six fours in his 73-ball knock.
Bangladesh, trailing by 106 runs, were earlier bowled out for 265 in their second innings after adding 107 to their overnight total of 158-4.
Left-arm spinner Herath did the damage as he captured four of the remaining six Bangladeshi wickets in the morning. He also completed his third haul of 10 or more wickets in a Test, after bagging 5-68 in the first innings.
Skipper Mushfiqur Rahim (40) offered some resistance before becoming Herath's 200th Test victim, caught by Angelo Mathews at first slip after hitting one six and three fours in his 87-ball knock.
Tailender Abul Hasan cracked two sixes in his unbeaten 25 to help Bangladesh cross the 250 mark.
Herath struck in his opening over of the morning, having Mominul Haque caught by Dimuth Karunaratne at short-leg with a delivery that turned and bounced. Mominul managed to add just one to his overnight score of 36.
Herath, who struck three times on Monday, claimed his fifth wicket when he bowled Nasir Hossain for a duck in his third over to reduce Bangladesh to 171-6.
Bangladesh counter-attacked, with Rahim smashing Herath for a straight six and Gazi (26) later lofting the spinner over long-off for his first six.
Gazi kept playing his shots after being dropped on 14 by Karunaratne at second slip off paceman Nuwan Kulasekara.
Gazi hit the next two deliveries for fours but his flourish did not last long. He was caught by Suranga Lakmal at long-on while attempting a big slog off Herath, who shared the new ball with Kulasekara.
Sri Lanka on Monday were bowled out for 346 in their first innings in reply to Bangladesh's 240. (AFP)

Pakistan looks to kabaddi to help build rugby

LAHORE: Pakistan's rugby union chiefs are hoping to exploit the traditional tag-wrestling sport of kabaddi as they try to boost the game and build the country's fledgling international team.
Kabaddi, in which players hold their breath and try to tag an opponent before making it back to their half of the field, involves many of the skills needed for rugby -- speed, strength, tackling and evasive running.
In a country where anything other than cricket struggles to get a look in, the Pakistan Rugby Union (PRU) has grown rapidly since it was founded 10 years ago and now boasts more than 3,000 regular players.
And after the launch of a new "Super League" last month, PRU president Fawzi Khawaja said he now hopes to tap the reservoir of kabaddi talent.
The traditional team sport is very popular, particularly in Punjab, and last year Pakistan were winners of the Asia Cup and runners-up in the World Cup against arch-rivals India.
But Khawaja said that while there were national-level kabaddi players in the police rugby team, it was hard to lure people from what is a lucratively paid professional sport.
The new league started on a sunny spring Sunday in Lahore, Pakistan's second largest city. The posts were lengths of bamboo taped to football goals and the groundsmen were still painting lines on the pitch 10 minutes before kick-off.
But the competition in the four-team top division was fierce, with the opening round pitting the Army against Lahore, and Islamabad against the Defence Housing Association, a government department team.
While the Lahore-Army clash showed some early-season rustiness, fumbles and tactical naivety, the game was also packed with blood-curdling tackles, two sin-binnings and a suspected dislocated shoulder.
The Army's superior fitness helped them come from behind to win 12-8.
The national side were relegated to the fourth tier of the Asian Five Nations tournament last year but the PRU hopes that by replacing ad-hoc club matches with a proper competitive structure, the Super League will spark a resurgence. (AFP)

Wasim to help groom fast bowlers for Pakistan

KARACHI: Pakistan pace great Wasim Akram Tuesday promised to help groom a future generation of speedsters as his country looks to recapture former fast bowling glories.
Wasim was part of a long line of world-class Pakistani fast bowlers that began with Fazal Mahmood in the 1950s and featured the likes of Imran Khan, Waqar Younis and Shoaib Akhtar.
But pace stocks have dwindled in recent years and Pakistan currently have no fast bowlers among the top 10 in either Test or one-day rankings.
Chief selector Iqbal Qasim last week expressed disappointment over the lack of quality fast bowlers, a concern which Wasim hopes to help address by holding a two-week camp in April to unearth new talent.
Wasim, who is regarded as the best left-arm fast bowler ever to play at international level with 414 Test and 502 one-day wickets, said Pakistan need to improve their bench strength to excel in the long form of the game.
"I am sure talent is there but there is no plan B," he said. "We don't have good bowlers for Tests which was proved in the series against South Africa where we lacked in that department."
Pakistan were white-washed by world number one South Africa 3-0 last month in their recently concluded Test series. The hosts also hold a 2-1 lead in the ongoing five match one-day series.
Wasim added Pakistan's inability to make use of home-advantage, which allows players to excel, was a key factor holding back the development of youngsters.
"Not playing at home is the key factor in not producing quality players. Until and unless you don't play top quality teams at home it will be hard to find quality players," he said.
Pakistan have not hosted top-level international cricket since terrorists attacked the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore in March 2009, an event which prompted foreign teams to shun tours to the country over security fears.
Wasim said it was time for cricket authorities to take concerns over fast-bowling more seriously.
"The PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) needs to lift the first-class cricket and find some quality fast bowlers. Once I get 10-12 fast bowlers, I will work on them and they can be groomed to play at international level," said Wasim.
With the emergence of Twenty20 cricket, the shortest form of the game, teams around the world have experimented with different bowling line-ups for each format. But Wasim said when it comes to pace bowling, one size should fit all.
"It's hard to find separate fast bowlers for three formats. I believe if a fast bowler is good enough for Tests, then he must be good for all formats and sustain himself for the limited over matches as well." (AFP)

Bangladesh bans top umpire for 10 years

DHAKA: The Bangladesh Cricket Board on Monday banned international umpire Nadir Shah for 10 years after a sting operation by an Indian TV channel found him apparently willing to fix matches for cash.
Shah announced he would appeal against the decision, saying he had been made a scapegoat, but the move was welcomed by the International Cricket Council as underlining a commitment within the game to root out corruption.
The Bangladeshi board launched an inquiry after the private India TV channel aired footage last October which appeared to show that the 49-year-old Shah was willing to give LBW (leg before wicket) decisions on demand.
While the board did not publish the findings of the inquiry, it said in a statement that Shah "will not be considered for BCB retainership for 10 years".
"During this period he will not be eligible for any assignment under the jurisdiction of the BCB," it added.
Shah, who has stood in 40 one-day internationals and three Twenty20 internationals, was one of six umpires caught in the undercover investigation, including three from Sri Lanka and two from Pakistan.
All of the six were subsequently suspended by their own boards but they have consistently refuted the allegations.(AFP)

PCB finalises inquiry against its officials

LAHORE: Pakistan's board has said an internal inquiry against two of its officials, including former Test umpire Nadeem Ghouri, would be finalised shortly.
The allegations were broadcast only days after the final of the World Twenty20 tournament in Sri Lanka, knocking some of the gloss off one of the game's premier events.
David Richardson, chief executive of the International Cricket Council (ICC), said the ban on Nadir Shah reflected a commitment among the games rulers "to root out corruption from our great sport".
"This decision also reiterates cricket's zero-tolerance approach towards corruption and should serve as a reminder to all stakeholders, be they umpires, players, curators or administrators of the risks and challenges the sport faces," said Richardson.
"We can only beat the corrupters by remaining vigilant and by following the procedures and protocols which are in place."
Shah was among the umpires at the inaugural Bangladesh Premier League last year, a local version of India's high-octane IPL Twenty20 tournament.
The competition was marred by corruption allegations and ended up with former Bangladeshi international Shariful Haque being indefinitely banned.
While ICC anti-corruption officials help to police the IPL, the international game's governing body has expressed concern about other leagues including the Bangladesh tournament.
Cricket has been embroiled in a number of corruption scandals in recent years.
Three Pakistani cricketers, including former captain Salman Butt, were jailed in Britain in 2011 after being found guilty of spot-fixing following a newspaper sting. (AFP)

Despite being a popular sport, lack of government support and infrastructure has held back the game's progress in the country, where cricket is the number one passion.
Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) said Qatar has promised to help lift the sport after a high-level Qatari delegation met with local authorities.
The support includes youth development, training of coaches and development of women's football, it added.
Pakistan is planning to launch a football league along the lines of the cash-rich the Indian Premier League for Twenty20 cricket, pending the signing of a sponsorship deal.
The country is 171st in the FIFA world rankings. (AFP)
